China Basin is a noir thriller with a historical backdrop of 97,000 words written in the first person from the perspective of San Francisco homicide Inspector, Andrew Johnson. As a backdrop, Johnson, half white, half black deals with the complications of a white and much younger love interest amid 1950s American racial prejudice.
More than solving a murder, the larger story involves heroin and prostitution trafficking and the rising conflict in Southeast Asia. Corruption in his own department and FBI tacit support of the heroin trade, put Johnson, whose father was an addict, on a lonely path to end a problem he views all too personally.
